The silly season has arrived, festive season or not gift giving is a gift in itself!

By Nicole Hicks, Early Years Specialist

So less about the “festive season” and more about the gift of giving – where did this come from?

Well, it turns out – The giving of gifts may be one of the oldest of human activities that pre-dates civilisation and may go back to the origin of our species.

The origin of our species! Yes, even in primitive cavemen culture, the giving of gifts was fairly common. It was used to show love and affection towards one another and to give appreciation for what someone has done. From unusually shaped rocks to a tooth from an animal – giving gifts were common behaviours. The gifts we now receive have just become more elaborate as we have advanced in civilisation!

The psychology of why gift giving is so rewarding is easy, it allows people to connect. And making connections in the world we currently live in, is so important. Some families and loved ones have been separated for nearly two years now in some locations. That’s a long time between emotional and physical connections!

We can only hope the next year brings – a stop to the distance, an ease in the pandemic restrictions and everyone can experience the loving connections we have all missed with family and friends, both new and old. Making connections with people around us gives us a sense of purpose and a feeling of satisfaction. This feeling enlightens and brings out the best in us.

There is an old saying “it is better to give than receive” this has a special meaning and when the realisation the benefits gifting provides to those who give, Fuzzy Wuzzy the colourful rainbow in the Imagineland forest.we should all be shouting it from the rooftops!
