How imagination and creativity leads to happiness

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, adults who engaged in creative activities experienced an “upward spiral” of positive emotions, psychological well-being, and feelings of flourishing in life.

The same is true of children. Imagine for a moment that you are a child and given free rein to be creative, inspired, and educated.

Then imagine the keen sense of happiness and accomplishment that would follow from that self-actualisation.

Creativity in children has some overwhelmingly positive effects including intellectual benefits, physical benefits, emotional and social benefits plus the improvement of social communication skills.

By teachers providing opportunities for children to try out new ideas, and explore different ways of thinking and problem solving, teachers can learn so much about the children in their classroom.

Sound play, listening to music, and dancing lets pre-schoolers express all kinds of feelings and allows children to experience new ways of looking at things.

Drama and storytelling also give children opportunities to build and practice vocabulary, use imagination and learn about the structure of stories, and writing.

The importance of imagination is immeasurable.

Having the ability to imagine things pervades our entire existence. It influences everything we do, think about, and create.

It leads to elaborate theories, dreams, and inventions across all professions, from academics to the arts.

When children use their imagination in play, they are developing crucial psychological and emotional capacities that help them understand the world in which they live and their relation to it; they are learning to problem solve, creating new possibilities, that in time could even change the world.

Einstein famously said,  “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand”.
